12 Apostoli Nature Reserve
A mountain trail leading to unusual volcanic rock formations above 1,700 metres.
The route to 12 Apostoli is a mountain experience in its own right. The trail climbs from the Gura Haitii area through forest and meadows, with the rocks gradually appearing like silhouettes shaped by wind and erosion.
Start early, follow the waymarks, and treat it as a full-day hike rather than a short walk. Weather changes quickly in the Călimani Mountains, and a waterproof jacket matters at altitude.
The geological reserve protects roughly 200 hectares of volcanic formations inside Călimani National Park.
The rocks were shaped by the erosion of volcanic conglomerates in the Călimani massif. Known forms include Moșul, Mareșalul, Gușterul, and Dragonii, names that make the route easy to remember and retell.
