Voroneț Monastery

The famous blue of its frescoes and an essential stop near Gura Humorului.

Voroneț is where a colour has become almost a name of its own. The blue on the western façade is visible from a distance, but come closer for the painted scenes, the church proportions, and the quiet courtyard.

Arrive early or towards the end of the day, and pair the visit with Gura Humorului or Humor Monastery. It is an active place of worship, so follow the dress and photography rules at the entrance.

The church was built in 1488 under Stephen the Great, while its exterior paintings were added decades later. Voroneț blue made the monastery one of Bukovina’s defining images.
