Putna Monastery

Putna is more than a stop on a painted-monasteries route. It is a place where Bukovina’s history can be felt in the scale of the buildings, the quiet courtyard, and the valley road leading to the monastery.

Come in the morning, when the light is gentle on the walls, and leave time for the church, museum, and a walk through the village. For a weekend around Rădăuți–Putna, this is a natural starting point.

The monastery was founded by Stephen the Great in the second half of the 15th century and became his burial place. Its church and museum preserve traces of this essential role in Moldavia’s history.
