Dragomirna Monastery

A fortified monastery with strong walls and a slender church, set in a quiet landscape near Suceava.

Dragomirna feels close to a fortress: walls, towers, and a gate give the ensemble a strong presence before you even reach the church. Inside, the space becomes taller and more delicate.

It makes a good stop on a route starting from Suceava. Leave time for the enclosure and the collection museum; here, architecture and manuscripts tell the same story of a community devoted to culture.

The monastery is closely linked to Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca and Chancellor Luca Stroici, while its defensive walls were raised during the time of Miron Barnovschi.

The monastery’s main church is dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit, while the fortified enclosure incorporates a bell tower and defensive towers. Its museum collection preserves the site’s connection to the Dragomirna school of miniature manuscripts.
